Nick Oberthaler

Austrian artist Nick Oberthaler creates abstractions using a wide variety of materials, including ink, wax, pastel, gouache, and found images. Drawing from a range of visual references, Oberthaler makes work that moves between kitsch and aesthetic ambiguity to explore how the human psyche relates to visual culture. To highlight this notion, Oberthaler includes mirrors in many of his works and installation to encourage the viewer to consider their own reflection in relation to visual language.

Oberthaler’s work has been exhibited in group and solo shows internationally, including Centre d'art Bastille, Grenoble, Contemporary Art Institute, Villeurbanne, WIELS Center for Contemporary Art, Brussels, The Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Emily Harvey Foundation, New York, and Manifesta Foundation, Amsterdam. He has participated in residencies at the Center for Contemporary Art Andratx and WIELS Center for Contemporary Art.
