About The Work

In this pop-up paper work, Asma Mundrawala creates a three-dimensional stage of nostalgia and pop culture references set in her native Karachi. "The original inspiration for my work emerges from the language of popular culture and explores the relationship between modernization in the urban setting and its effect on our culture," Mundrawala told the Asia Society of this work. "Given the multi-cultural diversity of Karachi and the interplay of the enormous influences that form its visual vocabulary, the works engage in issues that revolve around the experience of living in the city."

About Asma Mundrawala

Asma Mundrawala is a visual artist and theater practitioner with a DPhil degree from the University of Sussex. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine Art at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in Karachi. Apart from a visual arts practice, Asma has a background in theater since 1997 and is the co-founder and Director for Zambeel Dramatic Readings, a group that renders Urdu and English texts in dramatic form for live audiences. Asma received her BFA from the IVS in 1995 and an MA in Art and Performance Theory from the Wimbledon School of Art, London (2002).
