About The Work
Banksy's first gallery exhibition, the now-infamous 'Crude Oils' exhibition opened at 100 Westbourne Grove (Notting Hill, London) in 2005. It was the artist'ssecond major exhibition, after Turf War (in 2003). The show featured 20 versions of classical oil paintings, among them Van Googh, Hopper, Warhol, Turner and Monet.
Also present were 200 live rats, causing numerous complaints from local neighbours. To this, the artist commented "rats are the triumph of the little people, the undesirables and the unloved. They are the ultimate role model. Despite the best efforts of the authorities, they have survived, flourished and brought entire civilisations to their knees".
This piece, depicting the British supermodel 'Kate Moss' (in a style nodding to Andy Warhol's Marilyn), was produced as promotional material for the exhibition. It is believed to have been produced in a limited quantity (exact edition size unknown), and has since become a rare collectors item.
