Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen

Artists Carla Arocha and Stéphane Schraenen have been collaborating since 2005. Their work addresses the nature of images and its similarity or detachment from the perception of that image. Their work blurs the line between the reality of tangible materials and conceptual abstraction. Toeing the line between Modernism and emotional association, Arocha–Schraenen’s practice draws upon and re-imagines everyday reference, reflecting the fundamental nature of visual construction.

The artists have had solo exhibitions at the FRAC Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand, France, the Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland, and the MUHKA in Antwerp, Belgium and have work in a number of prestigious institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the F.R.A.C. Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand, the Fundación Banco Mercantil in Caracas, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen (MUHKA), and the Stiftung in Bern.
