About The Work

Part of a series of similar images, Carolee Schneemann’s 1973 print Parallel Axis depicts an image reflected four times on two axes of symmetry. A nude woman arches over a railroad track, the diagonals of her body mimicking the single-point perspective or the receding tracks. The work attempts to find new ways of viewing the body by placing it within a landscape as an integral part of the visual field.
