China Marks

Drawing with thread, China Marks creates works that merge the craft of sewing and textiles with the draftsmanship associated with ink and lead. The artist frequently combines art historical references with contemporary socio-political images creating a true collage of images and themes. Her work Winter in China (2003) prominently features a bust of Mao Zedong floating atop a wintry scene, among paisley and chintz fabrics. Marks's works have been exhibited in a number of public and private institutions, including the Montclair Art Museum, the Newark Museum, and the Queens Museum of Art.
