Christopher Russell

To realize his profoundly eerie, visually stunning imagery, American photographer and bookmaker Christopher Russell assembles multiple references and employs various techniques, piecing together engaging visual narratives. Most notably, Russell has been known to scratch drawings into the surfaces of his photographs and incising designs into the glass encasing of a work, creating a shadow effect. Throughout all of his works, themes of nature, the psychosomatic, memories, and ghosts appear, and, as a result, Russell’s work is highly unique.

Russell received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco and his MFA from Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design. His work is included in a number of major permanent collections, those of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, among them. Russell is also recognized for his original zines.
