Venice Biennale: Main Exhibition

It's easy to let the national pavilions swarming the famed Giardini distract you from the main curatorial event at this year's Venice Biennale—the “The Encyclopedic Palace” exhibition in the cavernous Arsenale—but that would be a mistake. Organized byNew Museum associate director Massimiliano Gioni (the youngest Biennale curator in a century), the highly anticipated show has been inspired by outsider artist Marino Auriti’s never-realized plan for a museum that would house all human knowledge.

As with many of Gioni's past exhibitions, “The Encyclopedic Palace” will mix emerging, established, and under-recognized artists to rethink notions of "insider" and "outsider" art. Biennale visitors can also expect to find Haitian Voudou flags and tantric paintings, as well as more familiar fare from the likes of Cindy Sherman and Richard Serra. Additionally, the Biennale will showcase site-specific outdoor installations and performances by artists like Ragnar Kjartansson, who four years ago gained international renown as the national artist at Iceland's pavilion.
