Venice Biennale: Museum Shows

Adding to the wealth of contemporary art in Venice during the Biennale, this year's main event is supplemented by two major exhibitions at the island city's most richly funded private museums.

At the Prada Foundation, celebrated curator Germano Celant (best known for ushering Arte Povera to international renown) has organized a fascinating show together with artist Thomas Demand and architect Rem Koolhaas that lovers of art history can't miss: an artwork-by-artwork restaging of curator Harald Szeemann's legendary 1969 show "When Attitudes Become Form" at the Bern Kunsthalle, which redefined the possibilities of what curating can and should be. Attempting to recreate the show's installation with as much fidelity to the original as possible (akin to what the Barnes Foundation pulled off in Philadelphia), the new exhibition—titled “When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013”—promises an audacious engagment with the relatively recent past in a city in love with history.

Meanwhile, at François Pinault's Punta Della Dogana museum, the eminent French collector has engaged LACMA director Michael Govan to join Palazzo Grassi curator Caroline Bourgeois in organizing a similarly ambitious exhibition. Titled "Prima Materia," the show assembles work by 30 artists in Pinault's collection in an investigation of the quintessential substance undergirding all great contemporary art, regardless of its medium.
