Dan Walsh

The collective project of Dan Walsh’s large-scale abstract paintings is, as the artist has described it, “minimal actions producing maximal, optical force.” Taking cues from minimalism, Op art, and geometric abstraction, Walsh also weaves references to specific historical forms as diverse as Peruvian textiles, Tibetan mandalas, and computer chip circuitry into his canvases, which are produced through a process of marking and layering. With their diverse references to visual culture, matched with the primacy of the Modernist grid, Walsh’s paintings are a reflection of our over-saturated, context-conscious, and constantly-updating contemporary culture.

Dan Walsh (b. 1960, Philadelphia) studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and at Hunter College, New York. He has recently had solo exhibitions at Lausanne’s Speerstra Foundation in Switzerland, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, and The Suburban in Chicago, among others. He lives and works in New York.
