Derek Sullivan

Canadian-born artist Derek Sullivan works in a wide variety of medium, often using the correlations between genres and forms as the subject for his multi-faceted pieces. Painting, sculpture, bookwork, installation, printmaking and drawing all intersect within the artist’s work, which examines structure, visual aesthetic and printed matter. One of his most noted installations is from his 2011 show Albatross Omnibus, in which Sullivan suspended a collection of artist’s books from the ceiling, inviting viewers to read the text using rolling stepladders.

Sullivan has exhibited throughout Canada and internationally, including solo shows at Toronto Sculpture Garden, Toronto, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, Canada, University of Waterloo Art Gallery, Canada, Galerie Emmanuel Hervé, Paris. Group shows include L’Enclos des Bernadins, Paris, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Biennale de Montreal 2011, Montreal, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, Australia, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, and the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina. In 2012, Sullivan was shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award.
