    About The Work

Devin Troy Strother’s “Shot Paintings” playfully explore the black vernacular with its 247 miniature segments. Each the size of an index card, works such as Shot #72 Jaquetta picture elongated female figures who appear to dance across—or within—the mixed media elements, a formal motif that finds art-historical precedent in Ernie Barnes’s celebrated painting Sugar Shack of the early 1970s.
