About The Work
Since the beginning of his career, Ding Yi has been preoccupied with the repetition of simple cross motifs, ‘x’ and ‘+’ which he uses to create vast aesthetic grids. Such physical repetition imbues Ding Yi’s work with a mantra-like, meditative quality. Not surprisingly, the artist cites the Chinese philosophy of Taoism as a source of inspiration, as well as the neon quality of Shanghai at night.
Ding Yi says of this silk scarf work, “this new limited edition for Ikon was created from one of my new works, Appearance of Crosses 2015-11. The carved grids destroy and remove paint on basswood, revealing layers of color or even the wooden base below. Throughout the creative process, buoyed up by my sense of enthusiasm, I have kept a very intense relationship with the painting in order to create an embryonic energy in the work. In this way it is an exploration without a hypothesis.”
