Bleu Acier Master Printer Erika Schneider has been collaborating with French sculptor Dominique Labauvie since 1986. This recent series of images from 2017, including Mami Wata takes a unique look at form within Labauvie's passion of frontality.
In Florida there is a large Haitian population and interacting with them on a daily basis offers a view into their cultutre. As a French speaker language can be shared and discussions arise. Labauvie was taken by a conversation he had about this feminine deity very similar to the mermaid. He creates a mysterious waterscape in woodcut using a rich royal violet on which was printed using lithography and gold ink a potrait of these ocean women advancing toward the humans in need.
