    About The Work

Elliot Erwitt's intimate and often humorous shots of everyday life cemented him as one of best-known photographers of the 20th century. In this image, he captures visitors to the Castle de Versailles as they consider paintings in the gilded halls, but the takeaway is ironic: the viewers carefully examine the plaque for a painting no longer on view.
