Eric White

Brooklyn-based painter Eric White creates surrealistic compositions that explore the limits of perception. Imagery familiar from 1940s era Hollywood movies and pop culture appear in dreamlike scenarios that are rendered meticulously in oil paint. White employs nostalgic scenes and images alongside more personal elements like photographs to create paintings reminiscent of photomontage.

Exploring pop culture, White’s LP series of paintings are tongue-in-cheek redesigns of classic album covers. For these works, White uses wordplay and anagrams to change the titles of albums, but uses the original names as the title of each painting in the series. Despite their thematic differences from other series, in which he references a nostalgia for the glamour and style of past eras, this series in many ways epitomizes White’s practice—particularly in their flawless painterly quality and evident sense of humor.

White is a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Painting Fellowship. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Laguna Art Museum and the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, among others.
