Ewan Gibbs

Internationally recognized for his unique visual language, the work of British artist Ewan Gibbs reflects a precise and methodical style developed when he was an art student in London—based on a book detailing knitting patterns. Shown in black and white, the images of each pattern, shown stich-by-stich through a series of geometric marks, inspired Gibbs to adopt this shorthand into his practice. When viewed up close, Gibbs’ intimate depictions of architectural landmarks appear abstractly murky—from afar they are luminous. Among the subjects he has chosen are hotel interiors and facades, sports figures, and the cities of London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. In 2009 Gibbs was commissioned to created the visuals for The Armory Show and a portfolio of eighteen drawings celebrating the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
