Christopher Dunlap You’re Only a Stranger Once

SARDINE is extremely pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Christopher Dunlap. You’re Only a Stranger Once opens with a reception on Saturday, March 11, from 6 to 9 pm. It will run through Sunday, April 16, 2017.

The paintings in You’re Only a Stranger Once, engage the viewer through a playful, disruptive exploration of color and pattern. These forms create a multiplicity of relationships between simple shapes and complex structures. Through specific placement, repetition, and implied perspective, the paintings assert a sense of depth. By creating an image that can register spatially in multiple ways, the paintings draw the viewer to a heightened awareness of their own visual processes. This sustained attention seeks to bridge a gap between perception and sensation.

Dunlap cites his mother's quilting as an early influence. Like quilting, his paintings also combine small colorful elements that unite to create a complex image.  Similarly, game boards and maps, which have their own dialectics and visual language, find their way into his paintings. His work does more than just reveal thoughts; it’s a method of thinking itself, one that operates on its own oneiric logic.

Christopher Dunlap received his BFA from University of Washington and his MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. Recent exhibitions include GCA (solo), Brooklyn; Centotto, Brooklyn; Space Available, Brooklyn; Spring Break Art Fair, NYC; Parlour Bushwick, Brooklyn and Es Ef Eff, Brooklyn. In 2016, he was featured in Space Oddity, a group show at SARDINE curated by Matthew Mahler. The exhibition featured work by Christopher Dunlap, MaryKate Maher, and Alina Tenser. This is his first solo show with SARDINE. Christopher Dunlap lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

SARDINE is located on the ground floor of 286 Stanhope Street between Wyckoff and Irving Avenues in Bushwick, Brooklyn, one block from the Dekalb L train and near the Knickerbocker M.
