About The Work

Instantly recognizable, the works of Colombian artist Fernando Botero are characterized by their smooth, bulbous figures, wide faces and small features. Influenced early on by the work of Spanish and Mexican artists such as Francisco de Goya, Diego Rivera and Diego Velázquez, Botero developed his trademark style in the 1960s, using flat bright color or smooth bronze to present “inflated” versions of his portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Often depicting affluent or powerful figures, Botero’s work contains element of political satire. In this unique charcoal on paper drawing, Botero renders one of his trademark portraits—a couple on their wedding day.
