Florian Merkel

In the mid-eighties photographer and painter Florian Merkel attracted attention with his astonishing colorized photographic depictions, which skirted the boundaries of classic photography and painting. By drastically reducing the physical, tangible photographic element of his images, Merkel discovered a stylized type of visual language with which he created complex image realms, realized either by hand or with the aid of digital reproduction techniques. Merkel is the co-founder of the experimental rock band Die Gehirne, architect of the Knut Baltz Formation, and since 2008 has been part of the performance trio Poly-modular! He has also recently been working with Jasmin Schwartz on video projects and interactive installations for the label BEEP OFF. Merkel’s work has been exhibited internationally since 1984, including Galeria La Nuova Pesa, Rome, Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig, Leipzig, and Chung King Project, Los Angeles.
