About The Work

Francesco Vezzoli is known for threading appropriated images from Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical paintings onto the reproduced visages of contemporary celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Sophia Loren. In this unique work, however, he performs a type of inverse by collaging a photograph of de Chirico’s face onto someone else’s artwork. An exaggerated theatrical demonstration, Vezzoli’s work irreverently exalts his predecessor by inserting his likeness into an equestrian portrait of power and mounting the scene in a gaudy frame.
