    About The Work

General Idea formed in 1969 in Toronto and over the next 30 some years, the trio made a remarkable and inimitable contribution to post-modern art.

With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues including consumerism, media consumption, the cult of the artist and AIDS.

In 1984 GI had a major retrospective titled ‘The 1984 Miss General Idea Pavilion’. This show was extremely important in terms of General Idea’s career as it was initiated by two of the most-influential museums in the period: the Kunsthalle Basel and the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven.

During this era, General Idea created works about "the Pavilion" that toyed with "ancient" mythologies, their present and future. Work included "fragments" as if they were archeological remains of the Pavilion.

This highly-desirable and incredibly rare multiple from 1986 was a "replica"or archive of The 1984 Miss General Idea Pavilion. This work was created for General Idea’s exhibition of the same name at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, in Buffalo, New York in summer 1986. The replica unfolds to create a 3-dimensional reproduction of the Armoury of the Pavilion.
