About The Work

In his abstract photography and sculptures, Geraldo de Barros followed the Concrete Manifesto’s tenet that there is nothing more concrete, or more real, than a line, a color, or a plane. In the 1980s he began his Jogos de Dados series, a set of 55 geometric paintings made of Formica on wood, each one offering new perspectives on familiar forms thus converting the viewer from passive to active participant in the creation of meaning. This unique work on paper is a study for a sculpture whose flat planes of color appear to be in constant motion as the eye interprets them as concave, then convex, then flat again.
