Gerwald Rockenschaub

Berlin-based Austrian artist Gerwald Rockenschaub’s unique take on minimalism has resulted in a complex sculptural oeuvre that challenges the so-called white cube and calls the relationship between the artwork, viewer, and exhibition space into question. Rockenschaub’s works in animation, painting, sculpture, and site-specific installation use radical reduction and concentration to push the formal vocabulary of the abstract avant-garde, but never strays into the color palette of more staid academia. Bright, celebratory, and defying easy categorization, Rockenschaub’s works are as fresh as they are thought provoking.

Rockenschaub has exhibited in a number of venues including Documenta 12 and the 1993 Venice Biennial's Austrian Pavilion to Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2011), Kunsthalle Bern (2008), and Vienna's mumok (2004). He has also shown his work in exhibitions at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, St. Gallen, Switzerland, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich, and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris, among others.
