About The Work

In his drawings, Gustavo Abascal presents nature as a dark, subsuming force. This work is from Nothing and Everything , a series intended to show the coexistence between the fullness of forms–organic, artificial, and false. The raw material or the leitmotif of the work is speculative fiction of structures and scenarios, mostly involuntary forms that coexist between architecture and the gradual action of invasive vegetation.

About Gustavo Abascal

Gustavo Abascal’s drawings address topics such as decomposition, the transitory, horror, and the occult to explore the social and existential consequences of living in a violent society of exploitation and consumption. Underground music, drone, and metal are an important influence on his work, as is literature, the relationship between horror and fantasy, poetry, and fiction. For Heavy Matter Abascal worked with different ideas of concealment, taking as its starting point anti-matter and unthinkable phenomena, producing in a roll of large-scale drawing suspended from the wall and partially rolled. The continuity of this research led to the series Strategies Against Architectures, whose title was taken from the album of the band Einstürzende Neubauten (collapsing new buildings). Creating a point of tension between the antagonists Nature and Architecture, the work builds fictitious atmospheres that create in a new totality of coexistence between organic and inert matter.

He has had solo exhibitions at talcual gallery in Mexico City, Impronta Casa Editora in Guadalajara, and Kunstnerhuset Classensgade in Denmark. His work has been included in group exhibitions at Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, Bakkehusmuseet in Copenhagen, and Neu West in Berlin, among other venues.
