About The Work
Artspace and Phaidon are pleased to present XXX, a new limited edition print by Harland Miller, published by Artspace and Phaidon and produced by Manifold Editions. XXX is released alongside Phaidon’s first-ever book to focus exclusively on Miller’s Letter Paintings series. The limited edition includes a signed and numbered print and the new monograph, all presented in a custom-produced clamshell portfolio box.
Known for bold typographic style and wit, Miller brings his signature blend of literary and graphic references to this edition. XXX also showcases the artist’s iconic use of bold color, rendered through playful splashes of pink and red that evoke a sense of spontaneity in the studio. In a rare gesture, Miller’s new print references an original sketch for one of his large-scale Letter Paintings, also titled XXX.
“...showing the original working drawing for the painting was kind of revealing, and something nobody had ever really done before. So, this is the first incarnation of XXX and I guess that makes it intimate, a sensation or feeling which speaks to an aspect of what’s being suggested by XXX.” —Harland Miller
Drawing from his background in literature and love of writing, Miller’s Letter Paintings and related works nod to the visual language of vintage book covers, layered with phrases that are both poignant and tongue-in-cheek. The limited edition print’s accompanying monograph, Harland Miller: XXX, captures the full spectrum of this celebrated series, featuring more than 100 artworks alongside never-before-seen photography of the artist in his studio.
