Helen Frik

Helen Frik is an artist whose conceptually driven multidisciplinary practice explores the themes of human failing and art’s inability to live up to life. Her works often address the reassuring dependability of the physical world–gravity, mass, form, material–as opposed to the unquantifiable nature of human emotion. They acknowledge that art’s role as communicator of ideas often fails–that art can be seen as a mediator, a way of getting the thoughts of the artist into the head of the viewer (suggestions and propositions as opposed to fact) but this is where the problems start. Imagery is open to interpretation and misreading and Frik’s work deals with these misunderstandings and gaps in human knowledge.

Her solo exhibitions include Stedejilk Museum in Amsterdam, Museum Boimans von Beuningen in Rotterdam, The Wall House in Gröningen, David Risley Gallery in Copenhagen, and Chapter Arts Center in Cardiff. Group exhibitions include Anningjahoff Sculpture Park in Zwölle, Cock and Bull Gallery in London and Schiedam Museum.
