    About The Work

Like many of her peers, (notably her ex-husband Robert Motherwell) Frankenthaler was an avid and restless printmaker. Frankenthaler experimented with many different printing approaches.

This work, with its confidently minimal approach, has a similar spirit to Frankenthaler's best canvases of the late 1960's - its willingness to allow a significant amount of untouched space. Similarly, while the work is unquestionably abstract it manifests a sensuality and tension evocative of her best works.

This is also an uncharacteristically small edition. “Southwest Blues” can be found in several important permanent collections including the MOMA and the Art Institute of Chicago.
