About The Work
The highly stylized photographs of Hiroshi Sugimoto are characterized by their romantic, ephemeral air—capturing Modernist architecture, seascapes, wax works and Buddhist sculpture in richly detailed series. In this print, Hall of Thirty-Three Bays, Sugimoto explores the mysterious nature of time, reality and experience, creating cinematic narrative in a series of classically structured images. Creating under the idea of photography as a time machine, or mechanism for creating and solidifying memory, Sugimoto captures the enigmatic essence of the Armed Merciful Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara figures, which have been passed down eight-hundred years.
