Ian Wallace

At the forefront of photoconceptualism, Ian Wallace creates works that marry photography and painting into a third medium, which the artist calls "pictorialism." Fascinated by art's role as philosophical and social commentary, he captures images that demand the viewer's consideration, from mundane depictions of street corners rife with existential possibility to scenes of activism fraught with righteous emotion. As Wallace has stated, "It is through the resonance and the resistance of materials that the concept becomes open to the responses of the spectator, it gives an opening to interpretations of the art concept from other eyes than the artist alone." His works have been exhibited in numerous institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the National Gallery of Canada.
