About The Work
For decades, Ida Applebroog has recorded text—outbursts, observations—as well as personal illustrations in her journals and sketchbooks. Creating subtly disturbing images from familiar figures, including children, animals and doll-like faces, Applebroog emphasizes the unsettling undertones of human existence. In this portfolio of five photogravures and aquatints on Somerset textured paper, Applebroog explores various notions of display, affection, and difference in her starkly alluring style of thick lines, simplistic faces, and understated tension.
