Iole de Freitas
Iole de Freitas actively participated in the Brazilian avant-garde movement, creating sculptures, installations, videos and photographs. Her first contact with art was through dance, an element has reemerged throughout her practice. During the 1970s, Iole used photography and Super-8 film to develop works dealing with fragmentation of the body’s image. In the next decade, in search for the three-dimensional space, she developed the Aramões–sculptures structured by wires and metal tubes, tissues and saws. From there, she focused on sculpture, always keeping in mind body, space, and movement. During the 1990s Iole’s practice centered on architecture, creating works that relate directly to real space and making use of translucent materials such as polycarbonate and leaked screens.
de Freitas’ work has been exhibited at the 9th Biennial of Paris, the 15th Bienal de São Paulo, 5th Mercosul Biennial, and Documenta 12 in Kassel. Her works have also been included in institutions such as Visuales Art Museo Alejandro Otero in Caracas, the National Gallery in Ottawa, Bronx Museum in New York, La Caixa in Madrid, São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, the Imperial Palace in Rio de Janeiro, the Art Center Hélio Oiticica in Rio de Janeiro, Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto …
