Irma Álvarez-Laviada

Using the idea of emptying the studio before an exhibition as a starting point, Irma Álvarez Laviada takes interest in the act and materiality of painting. Her series, Escenarios de producción, produced between 2011 and 2012, was done entirely using discarded materials left in the studio such as wood, wrapping paper, paint, and bubble wrap. The series serves as a residual memory of what existed and happened in that place, while it plays with the limits of what a painting “should be” and look like.

She has had solo exhibitions at Galería La Naval, Cartagena in Murcia, Galería Sicart in Barcelona, and Galería Agustina Ferreyra in San Juan, among others. Her work has been included in group exhibition at institutions such as Museo de Bellas Artes de Madrid and Centro de las Artes de Sevilla.
