    About The Work

What started out being a simple screenprint edition with the artist Jay Stuckey, spiraled into a year long collaboration between the artist and master-printer Ryan McIntosh. The finished project resulted in the most extensive print-based project in the artist’s career. The final “edition” consists of 26 one-of-a-kind works and 4 separate smaller editions that received similar hand-coloring by the artist. In total, 46 prints exist in the full collection.

The prints began as a series of drawings by Stuckey which were to be layered up on the prints much in the way he layers imagery in his paintings. However, partially into the printing process the artist felt compelled to start applying hand drawn elements onto each print. After all the prints were reworked by hand in the artist’s studio, the edition was then returned back into the printshop for more screenprinted layer, but in a very loose and haphazard way. The prints continued this back-and-forth process of reworking and more layering several times until the artist felt each individual print had reached a completed state.

Indicative to Jay Stuckey’s working style, each print was thought of as a new idea, often stemming from snippets of the artist’s dreams. The humor and accessibility of Stuckey’s work is counterbalanced by each piece’s hidden intricacy and purpose. Referencing his own subconscious and the confessional nature of Jungian psychoanalysis, Stuckey intends the immediacy of his work to present a line of inquiry and revelation to the viewer instead of imposing ideas. Stuckey intends his works to reveal themselves with subtlety and action, instilling the perseverance of his ongoing process.
