About The Work
Jill Galliéni takes several long months to sculpt each of her doll figures, using metal wiring, stuffing and all sorts of yarn, until she can reveal "an introspective dance stance, that grips you, turning the doll inside out.” She then covers the structure with thick fabrics, assembled and embroidered with colorful yarn. "Once the sculpture has taken shape, the embroidery helps to elaborate yet further on the sculpture, thinning down the curves, twisting again and again. I'm not embroidering to pretty the doll up, nor to add a touch of sophistication; it's part of the shaping process, says Galliéni of her process.
