Joe Bradley is notorious for his shape-shifting capabilities on canvas, merging minimalism and figuration in works that are at times spiritual, hallucinogenic, and funky. He considers painting to be an inner travel, and reacts to his aesthetic impulses as they arrive. His Schmagoo Paintings are comprised of generated monochromatic modular rectangles sculpted into loosely recognizable items, followed by cryptic emblems reminiscent of medieval battle flags. Although his black silhouette figures and murky oil paint abstractions might appear from the hand of two different artists, Bradley has an underlying vision of movement and the figure that links his deceptively simple, charming output.
Bradley has exhibited at Le Consortium, Dijon, France, MoMA PS 1, New York, Saatchi Gallery, London, MACRO Foundation, Rome, and a plethora of gallery exhibitions internationally since 2000. He was included in Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World exhibition at MoMA in 2015, and Portugal Arte 10 in 2010.
