About The Work
Zuma (1977-1978) shows John Divola's repeated visits to a abandoned beachfront house, observing the building's deteriorating state. Sometimes used by the fire department for fire fighting practice, the building changed drastically during the time of Divola's consecutive visits. Adding to this human presence, Divola would sometimes intervene himself by moving things around or adding spray paint. These acts of intervention became part of the inevitable process towards decay and ultimately disintegration, with Divola's documentation integrally linked to this: "My acts, my painting, my photographing, my considering, are part of, not separate from, this process of evolution and change."
