John Bankston

John Bankston's paintings and sculptures use the familiar formats of comics and coloring books to tell loosely autobiographical stories about race and gender. Often working in oil on linen, he creates human and animal characters whose boldly drawn and loosely filled-in outlines imply an ongoing process of self-discovery. He has received a Fleishhacker Eureka Fellowship and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award, among other honors, and has been included in important group shows such as the Rubell Family Collection's 30 Americans and the Studio Museum in Harlem's African Queen.
