Julian Mullan

The precision of Julian Mullan’s photographic compositions in contrast to the ambiguity of their location creates paradoxical imagery that calls into question their existence in place and time. Mullan meticulously crops his images in order to capture a feeling of isolation and abandonment. These tones reference his hypotheses for the industrial future, a future leading to mass discardment and desolation. He captures fleeting scenes that risk being recreated in museums and films rather than existing in the present. These documentations, while aesthetically arousing to the eye, do not aim to capitalize on opportune moments for artistic purpose, but instead hope to elicit a feeling of unnecessary nostalgia. His compositions are both an honoring of our modern age and a warning against the damage these modern privileges can affect.

In 2017 Mullan displayed his first solo exhibition at Galerie Halgand. Mullan tries to find the balance between personal projects and commissioned work. Recently he has worked with clients such as Die Zeit, Vogue, Creative Club Austria, NOW Design and Direction, AMAG, and Gusto Magazin.
