Katharina Gaenssler

Katharina Gaenssler’s primary concern is not the perfect individual photograph; rather, the object of her enterprise is to collect detailed pictorial information capable of translating a real location into a sophisticated spatial experience on the basis of photography. Her photo collages reproduce prismatically fractured vistas that grant the observer a spatial sensation all its own. Gaenssler’s décollages–what remains after an installation is taken down–shift the perspective again while enabling the surface and habitats to correspond to the temporary appearance.

She has had solo exhibitions at Braverman Gallery in Tel Aviv, Rencontre d’Arles, Barbara Gross Gallery in Munich, and Gallery Katharina Bittel in Hamburg, among others. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museum Folkwang Essen, Museum of Salzburg, and Stuttgart’s Museum of Art.
