Keith Coventry

Renowned artist and curator Keith Coventry is often associated with the YBA movement of the 1990s, at least generationally. While he began working alongside other prominent British artists within the movement, Coventry’s work varies in style and significance—he often engages with traditional mediums and materials, including printmaking. Working within a complex set of thematic parameters, Coventry explores modernist aesthetic in architecture and urban environments, with reference to constructivist painting of the 1920s. Often interweaving art history with the grit of banal city life, Coventry takes on ‘historical painting’ in a contemporary style.

Keith Coventry’s has been exhibited widely in the UK and Europe including Pace London, Museum of London, London, Fine Arts Society, London, Royal Academy of Arts, London, Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco, Whitechapel Gallery, London, and Lieu d’art Contemporain, Narbonne, France, among many others. In 2010 Coventry was awarded the John Moores Painting Prize for his Spectrum Jesus work. He was the co-founder and curator of City Racing, a highly regarded non-profit gallery in Kennington, which helped launch the careers of a number of YBA artsits, including Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing and Fiona Banner.
