About The Work

Laurie Simmons's photographs make use of dummies and dolls to create dreamlike, albeit realistically captured scenes. Simmons' fascination with dolls grew from the power she saw in their stiff or limited expressions, which lend certain neutrality to the figures. Placing these hand-held props in various situations and settings Simmons was able to have complete control over scenes where viewers could project their own emotions. This photograph evokes the iconic band The Beatles and continues her surrealistic take on American life.
