A cross-disciplinary visual artist, musician and poet, Lee Jaffe began his artistic practice in Brazil in 1969 as part of the Tropicalia movement often collaborating with seminal artists and filmmakers Helio Oiticica, Neville D’Almeida, Miguel Rio Branco and Rogeirio Sganzerla. Deemed subversive by the ruling military government and forced into exile along with his Brazilian colleagues, he lived between New York, Paris and London from 1970 to 1972 creating his own conceptual works as well as collaborations with Vito Acconci, Dennis Oppenheim and Gordon Matta-Clark. His work was included in the groundbreaking exhibition “Pier 18” at MoMA in 1971.

In 1973 Jaffe moved to Jamaica and began an ongoing relationship with Jamaican music. He lived with Bob Marley, organizing The Wailers’ first North American tours and eventually working as a musician and member of Bob Marley’s band and producing Peter Tosh’s iconic first solo album Legalize It.

After retuning to New York Jaffe began making large-scale paintings, sculpture and installations in the early 1980’s culminating in one-person exhibitions from 1992 to 1994 at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, the Ikon Gallery, UK and The Irish Museum of Modern Art. He also made several collaborative works with Nancy Spero and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In 2003 his book One Love: Life with Bob Marley and the Wailers was published by W. W. Norton and Company.
