About The Work

Lee Bul creates works that often take the form of large-scale sculptures or are architectural in scale; her most recent exhibition at Lehmann Maupin in NYC was a mirrored labyrinth structure that viewers could enter into. She won the Noon Award at the 2014 Gwangju Biennale for her presentation of early sculpture and films. The award is given to an established artist who has produced the most experimental and creative work that embodies the theme of this year's biennale.

Working across various media, Lee Bul creates multifaceted narratives exploring humanity's desire for the ideal society, which alternate between the utopian and dystopian. This drawing expands beyond references to the individual to broader ideas of social structures, architecture and cities and present a futuristic vision of urban landscapes. The forms expose the chaotic nature of these increasingly complex systems, highlighting the deterioration often associated with the promise of technological utopias.
