    About The Work

The work of photographer and mixed media artist Lorna Simpson often incorporates images of black women with various historical iconography as a means to explore the interrelation of sex, race and ethnicity in modern society. At times confrontational, and others subtly profound, Simpson’s work enriches the implications of her imagery through metaphor and material, exemplified in this sculptural piece, III (wish). The set consists of three wishbone casts in a wooden box, each made of a different material—the bronze and rubber bones are unflinching, while the ceramic is intentionally fragile.
