About The Work
Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to announce a new work by Lotus L. Kang, Mesoderm (38), 2023, as part of Chisenhale Editions.
Based on an original drawing on photographic paper, Mesoderm (38) metabolises Kang’s ongoing reflections on inheritance, migration and personal identity; what is taken into and felt in the body. The outline of buckwheat seeds takes us on an imagined journey to Kang’s grandmother’s grain shop in South Korea, while fleshy silicone replicas of Belgian Lotus biscuits, commonly found in cafés across Europe, become a stand-in for the artist and her fascination with the lotus root. Referencing the literal and metaphorical things that nourish us, Mesoderm (38)transports us across place and time to reflect on what is passed down to us – histories, bodies, and ancestral markers.
For her Chisenhale commission, In Cascades, Kang presents her most ambitious site-sensitive installation to date. The exhibition comprises a series of sculptures and architectural interventions, expanding Kang’s interest in the porosity of bodies and the flawed, leaky processes that underpin them.
