    About The Work

Caviar20 is thrilled to present the esteemed work of Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. (Also, an artist who continues to be undervalued - compared to her male contemporaries...On the plus side, there is tremendous opportunity for the savvy collector).

Although Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her contemporaries, Nevelson expanded her practice by exploring the many branches of printmaking, as the medium experienced a renaissance beginning in the late 1960's. As a printmaker Nevelson was very experimental, consistently trying different techniques and materials.

This work is a paradigm of Nevelson's printmaking. Nevelson utilized the technique of cast paper, whereby paper fibre or pulp is formed into a mold, creating a relief. The striking shapes and features of the work have Nevelson's classic shape and rich texture.

The vast output of Nevelson's work is in black. This relief, on the opposite end of the color spectrum, is completed in a creamy white. The light monochromatic color allows for shadows, accentuating Nevelson's mysterious shapes and meticulous composition. According to Nevelson, the color white "summoned the early morning and emotional promise."
