Luigi Ghirri

Acclaimed Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri pioneered new frontiers of color photography in the 1970s, exploring landscape and architecture with a conceptual eye. Working in series, Ghirri photographed parks, beaches, and urban spaces with a balanced eye and subtle wit, often bordering on deadpan. Ghirri spent most of his career working in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, where he captured the aesthetic nostalgia of his homeland. His first book of photographs was published by the Aperture Foundation in 2008, and in 2010 his work was the center of the acclaimed exhibition La Carte d’Après Nature curated by Thomas Demand.

Exhibitions of Ghirri’s images have been mounted at Fondazione MIA, Astino, Italy, Matthew Marks Gallery, Los Angeles, Museo Fotografia Contemporanea, Cinisello Balsamo, Musée Matisse, Nice, Italian Cultural Institute, New York, Centre for Contemporary Art, Montreal, Instituto Moreira Salles, Rio de Janeiro, and Aperture Foundation, New York, among others. The largest exhibition of Ghirri’s oeuvre was shown in 2013 at the MAXXI Museum in Rome, and his photographs were exhibited at the 2013 Venice Biennale.
