30 of the World's Top Artists at Auction

30 of the World's Top Artists at Auction
Sotheby's auction house, with auctioneer Tobias Meyer

Last May Edvard Munch's The Scream set a new record for the most expensive artwork sold at auction when it fetched a staggering $120 million at Sotheby's in New York, bypassing the $106.5 million achieved by Picasso's Nude, Green Leaves and Bust the year before. But the market for contemporary art is continuing to play a spirited game of catchup with these classics—as one can see with the world-record $34.2 million won by Gerhard Richter's 1994 Abstraktes Bild (809-4) (put on the block by Eric Clapton) at Sotheby's London in October, making the German painter the most expensive artist at auction alive. That distinction was formerly held by Jasper Johns.

As more and more collectors look to invest in the art of the present day, Artspace is proud to offer pieces by a wealth of artists whose work regularly bring in extraordinary prices at auction. In this collection we've included 50 works by some of the world's top earners, including Peter Doig, whose painting White Canoe sold for a then-world-record sum of $11.2 million in 2007. The gulf between that pricem—hammered down during the boom years preceding the global economic crisis—and the fresh record set by Richter tells you all you need to know about the rampant, unimpeded growth of the market for recent art.
