Though this year's iteration of Art Basel Miami Beach may lack the intense energy and glitzy verve for which it's become known, this slightly subdued pace (emphasis on slightly) has created an opening for serious viewing and discerning collecting. Unsurprisingly, dealers are reporting strong and steady sales so far, with emerging galleries also doing well. But as you may well know by now, Miami's art week isn't defined solely by its fairs, with crowds (and celebrity sightings) at the evening's parties reported to be booming. If you haven't yet succumbed to a bout of "fair-tigue," we've assembled another list of events and parties to visit around Miami this Friday, including a meeting of important museum minds and a panel discussion that involves breakfast tacos (if you're into that kind of thing).

— FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7TH —

Breakfast and exhibition viewing at Bakehouse Art Complex, 561 NW 32nd Street, 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

“Art Basel Conversations: Rethinking the Encyclopedia Museum” with Thomas P. Campbell, Michael Govan, András Szántó at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 10–11 a.m.

In one of the most highly anticipated events of the entire fair, Thomas P. Campbell, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will talk shop with Michael Govan, the director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in what is sure to be a fascinating discussion about the nature of contemporary museology. (I know that sounds really boring, but just trust me, you won’t want to miss it.)

“Breakfast Tacos at Tiffany’s” and panel discussion at Mestizo City, 81 NE 40th Street, 10 a.m.

“Art Salon: Street Art in the Middle East: Alternative Forms of Political Expression” with James Brett, Tala Saleh, and Princess Alia Al-Senussi at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 1 p.m.

“Art Salon: Book Launch: Commissioning Contemporary Art: A Handbook for Curators, Collectors and Artists” with Tom Eccles, Cesar Reyes, and Louisa Buck at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 2 p.m.

“Art Salon: How to Buy Art—And How to Handle It” with Ralph E. Lerner and Judith Bresler at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 3 p.m.

“Art Salon: New Media, New Markets: Buying, Selling, and Collecting Digital Art” with Sebastian Cwilich, Sabine Himmelsbach, Miltos Manetas, Lindsay Howard, and Melanie Bühler at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 4 p.m.

“Art Salon: Artist Talk” with Bill Viola and Bonnie Clearwater at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 5 p.m.

Reception with Artspace and Hyperallergic at Wood Tavern at Untitled., 12th Street and Ocean Drive, 5–7 p.m.

Take a break from the onslaught of art fairs and join Artspace and Hyperallergic for a refreshing cocktail on the beach at the Wood Tavern, where you can converse with some of your favorite online art writers.

“Art Salon: Challenges and Opportunities in Brazil and Mexico” with Mireya Escalante, Ana Leticia Fialho, and Charmaine Picard at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, 6 p.m.

Opening reception for PooL Art Fair Miami Beach at the Carlton Hotel, 1433 Collins Avenue, 5–10:30 p.m.

“Art Video: Shadows, Circles & Fire” at New World Center, SoundScape Park and Miami Beach Convention Center, 500 17th Street and 1901 Convention Center Drive, 8 p.m.

Chromatics and Prince Rama concert at the Gusman Center, 174 Flagler Street, 8 p.m., $20

You may have seen Prince Rama at their MoMA PS1: Warm Up performance this summer (remember summer?). The always entertaining sister act will share the stage with the synthpop group Chromatics, whose recent album, Kill For Love, is shortlisted on a number of “Best of 2012” lists.

“Art Film” screening of “Painters Painting” and panel discussion at Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road, 8 p.m.

There might not be a much better way to wind down after a busy day at art fairs than with the 1972 documentary film “Painters Painting,” which provides a behind the scenes look at the New York art scene from 1940-1970, and a glimpse at the lives and working methods of some of the most prominent artists at the time (or ever). The screening, which will be followed by a panel discussion from some of the film’s key creators, is free to the public, but seating is limited, so arrive early.

“Art Video: Laughing, Wondering & Meditating” at New World Center, SoundScape Park and Miami Beach Convention Center, 500 17th Street and 1901 Convention Center Drive, 9 p.m.

ArtNexus Party at the St. Regis Hotel, 9703 Collins Avenue, 9 p.m.–12 a.m., RSVP to artnexusparty@liasonscorporation.com

“Art Video: Spirit, Breath & Air” at New World Center, SoundScape Park and Miami Beach Convention Center, 500 17th Street and 1901 Convention Center Drive, 10 p.m.
